The STEP File Format

STEP is the standard neutral format for exchanging exact 3D CAD geometry between different CAD systems.

.step.stpSTEP (ISO 10303)

What is a STEP file?

A STEP file stores solids as exact boundary representations: real cylinders, planes and curved surfaces rather than triangles. A 20 mm hole is stored as a 20 mm cylinder, not an approximation.

STEP files often hold several parts and their assembly structure, along with units and basic colours. The .step and .stp extensions are the same format.

When to use STEP

Good for

  • Sending parts to suppliers and machine shops
  • Moving designs between CAD programs
  • Archiving engineering geometry

Not ideal for

  • 3D printing directly (convert to STL)
  • Web display and games (convert to GLB)

STEP file questions

What is the difference between .step and .stp?

None. They are two file extensions for the same ISO 10303 format.

How can I open a STEP file without CAD software?

Upload it to VIZON and open it in your browser. No CAD installation is needed.

Can I convert STEP to STL online?

Yes. Open the STEP file in VIZON Studio or the CAD editor and export STL.
