The FBX File Format

FBX is an Autodesk format for exchanging 3D scenes with meshes, materials, skeletons and animation between content tools and game engines.

.fbxFBX (Filmbox)

What is an FBX file?

FBX stores a full scene: meshes, materials, cameras, lights, skeletons, skinning and animation curves, along with units and axis settings.

It is proprietary but widely supported, which makes it a common hand-off format between modelling tools and engines.

When to use FBX

Good for

  • Moving rigged, animated characters between tools
  • Importing assets into game engines

Not ideal for

  • The web (convert to GLB)
  • Exact CAD geometry (use STEP)
